Manual labour? Especially in a California summer?

I’d rather teach a  class of 40 fifteen year olds with ADHD advanced physics.

Doubtful.

As a teacher, I do not want to be a one-trick pony.

And note: the high temp this past week, while I was working on that project, was maybe 70 degrees.

Oh, that isn't to bad. We're at 80 today.

What’ s with the bottom profile of the step platform planks looking like a wine wave?

Also is that JBweld used to secure the rebar for the new bottom step?

That’s the cross section of the plastic lumber.

Simpson Strong Tie epoxy. If I ever wanted to prank someone with some adhesive, that's what I would use. Expensive though...

Trying not to be that guy ...

and failing....

You’re supposed to have a 1" nosing between the front edge of the tread, and the face of the risers.

Hire an amateur and you get an amateurish result.

I’m sure it’s plenty strong and totally safe, and certainly leagues better than what they replaced, but the lack of nosing made my inner carpenter get all twitchy.

And now for a non back handed compliment: nice job tying that concrete in. Most pros would have just drilled in some rebar dowels in to the face of the old concrete. Your rebar job is far superior. That pad is going NOWHERE!

My inclination was toward nosing. The tread material was the only thing on offer at Home Depot and if you look at the profile, it would be sort of hanging over the front unsupported. I was afraid it would fail. This was a make-it-up-as-I-went-along kind of deal. The extra inch of tread that the nosing would give would make the steps “work” better. All that code stuff is mostly well thought out. I only built steps once before in my life, about 30 years ago. And I am thoroughly confident that many “pros” would have charged more and done a far poorer job.

The concrete part was fun. If I ever want to pull a prank that involves adhesive, I will use Simpson Strong-Tie epoxy. That stuff is absolutely rowdy.
